The Film Fatale

One of the upcoming films I’m excited to see is Hysteria, a comedy about the invention of the vibrator. The film stars Hugh Dancy, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Felicity Jones and Rupert Everett. I’m interested to see how accurate this film portrays the discovery of the vibrator. So far it seems quite accurate, as the title - Hysteria - was actually the term for a medical illness doctors associated with women during the 19th century. The remedy was for doctors to give these women a “pelvic massage”, which turned out to be an orgasmic experience, thereby leading to the discovery of the vibrator. It’s always a pleasure to watch films that give us an account of what people seriously thought during the olden days.

Fun Fact: Interestingly enough, the other Gyllenhaal (Jake) had a film called Love and Other Drugs, which was about the discovery of Viagra.
