SATURDAY NIGHT’S ALL RIGHT FOR FIGHTING

Like Steven Soderbergh, I too was shocked to find out that Haywire was Gina Carano’s first feature film, considering the woman is drop dead gorgeous and amazingly talented in mixed martial arts to boot. This fight scene from Haywire is an awesome sequence because not only is it reminiscent of the rough-and-tumble style of the Bourne movies, but also because it starts off looking like these two people are merely a lovely couple enjoying each other’s company. Little does the audience know that they are in for a deadly confrontation.

FUN FACT: Michael Fassbender and Carano filmed this hotel room scene with each other, no stunt doubles. Director Steven Soderbergh revealed at last year’s Comic-Con that Fassbender had a difficult time in one part of the hotel room brawl because his character was supposed to get smashed in the head with a vase, and apparently when someone is coming at you with a weapon, your instinct is to look said weapon. Fassbender was repeatedly being told not to stare at the vase for a few reasons: (1) not only was his character a trained assassin, so he would instinctively look away from the weapon to protect his face and vital parts like eyes, etc, but also (2) probably so Fassbender wouldn’t get smashed in the face with a vase. Gotta protect the mug when it’s the moneymaker, right (among other body parts…)? Fassbender also admitted that although he wore padding to protect himself from the blows, they still hurt coming from a powerhouse like Carano!

SATURDAY NIGHT’S ALL RIGHT FOR FIGHTING

THE RAID (2011)

One of the best action movies I’ve seen in a long time, The Raid introduces audiences to the Indonesian martial art pencak silat. Iko Uwais and company blow us away in this badass corridor fight sequence. Hand-to-hand combat has never looked this awesome. Uwais choreographed and did his own fights and stunts, which contributes to the overall believability of the sequence.

THE DARK KNIGHT (2008)

The BatPod is the coolest goddamn thing ever. That’s pretty much it. The Batmobile ejecting the BatPod, the semi flipping over, the BatPod going up over the wall…I remember this movie sequence eliciting audible gasps from the audience. That’s when you know you’ve got a quality action sequence right here.

CROUCHING TIGER, HIDDEN DRAGON (2000)

I can’t even begin to express how much I adore this fight scene. Zhang Ziyi and Michelle Yeoh are absolutely flawless in their delivery. The choreography is tight, exciting, improvisational yet beautiful and rhythmic. There are a slew of awesome fight scenes in this movie but this one stands out to me because of the intensity and the fast-paced choreography. It’s almost like the two ladies are doing a deadly dance with their swords.

RUSH HOUR (1998)

Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker are great in this tag team scene. I love the use of the chair that Chan demonstrates is an all-around flexible tool for fighting. I also love the back to back scenes where they are covering each other. War! What is it good for? Pretty much this.

COLOMBIANA (2011)

Zoe Saldana channels Jason Bourne in this gritty bathroom fight scene. Improvisation is key in this sequence and like her Treadstone counterpart, Saldana’s Cataleya fights with whatever is handy, from a hand towel to her belt to a pair of toothbrushes. The fight finishes in swift but satisfying style.

THE MATRIX RELOADED (2003)

If you guys haven’t noticed by now, I tend to like it when action scenes feature seemingly insurmountable odds. I would be remiss if I were to go on with this list and leave out anything from The Matrix trilogy, perhaps the mother of all cool-looking fight scenes. I love the romantic almost pristine setting, and I really like the use of various weaponry. There’s also a lot of non-fatal blows that look really cool. Normally I don’t tolerate when characters leave their sunglasses on when they’re indoors but for Neo? I’ll make an exception.

SATURDAY NIGHT’S ALL RIGHT FOR FIGHTING

OLDBOY (2003)

This scene is an iconic one from the South Korean original. I just love how unusual it is and yet it’s something that looks like it’s straight out of manga. Dae-su Oh’s manic fighting style perfectly represents his frame of mind. At this point he couldn’t give two shits what happens to him but at the same time you can see he’s fighting for his life. I love the use of slow tracking through the scene as well as the lighting and the shadowy aesthetic, which almost comes off like shadow puppetry that is well-known in various parts of Asia.

SATURDAY NIGHT’S ALL RIGHT FOR FIGHTING

THE ADVENTURES OF TINTIN (2011)

This is one of my absolute favorite chase scenes. It’s a marvel of animation and filmmaking, with a breathless chase through the streets of Morocco. Buildings are falling apart from underneath the motorcycle + sidecar that Tintin is driving, he leaps through windows and glides down clotheslines…it’s a phenomenal sequence and Steven Spielberg never ceases to amaze. The camera never cuts away but stays with the scene until it borders on the ridiculous, almost Uncharted style. This sequence pushes the boundaries of animation to the fullest, stacking on peril after peril which Tintin manages to overcome effortlessly.

CASINO ROYALE (2006)

This seemingly never-ending action sequence is a combination of a relentless chase and fight scene courtesy of 007 through the streets of Madagascar. I love the unexpected end of the scene, which is an excellent introduction to the newest Bond as well as a great representation of what we can expect from this MI6 mischief-maker. I’m almost out of breath just watching this sequence unfold!
